Signing Through the Mail
By: Jeremy Brown
If you have never tried collecting autographs "through the mail, " I strongly suggest you get your pen and paper ready and give it a
try. For the price of a couple of stamps, you can acquire signatures from players, past and present, that you may never have the
opportunity to obtain in person. There are dozens of resources, including books, magazines, and websites, that are exclusive to this
hobby and provide tried and true successes and up to date addresses of athletes from all sports. My best advice for getting started
is to take advantage of these resources and compile a list of players that are known to sign through the mail. Handwrite a short,
sincere letter explaining why you are a fan of the athlete and politely request an autograph. Enclose something for he or she to sign,
[I recommend you start small and only send out index cards or inexpensive trading cards until you have some experience under
your belt], and always enclose a self- addressed stamped envelope. "Through the mail" collecting is a really fun, budget- friendly
way to collect. Look into it. You will be glad you did.

If you are looking to go after an autograph in person, always be polite, the nicer you are the better the signer will be to everyone.
Don't be greedy, the few players that do take the time out to sign, are nice enough to do it, so be courteous and respectful of all
people around you. Nothing upsets me more than when an e-bay shark tries to get ten things signed and makes everyone mad and
you and your family get stuck with either no autograph or time for a picture. Get one or two things and move to the back of the line,
it makes everyone happy and you still can get all your things signed. If you are buying on e-bay, check out the seller and feedback
and read it carefully, not every negative feedback is negative, and not every positive is good. I personally won't buy anything over
$100 without checking out Google or blogs on specific sellers. You would be surprised how much time autograph collectors have
to write about sellers, but it is helpful.
